2009-09-28 17:50: New login server
Our new login server for customers using Unix shell is now commissioned as newshell.domeneshop.no. The server is available for testing this and next week, and will replace the current shell.domeneshop.no.

The new server uses the same operating system as our current webservers, Debian stable, and shall have the same software in the same versions as these webservers. Login will only be possible via SSH, telnet access will not be possible.

PHP 4 is not installed on this server, only PHP 5. PHP 5 is in the command PATH, both as php5 (just like the old server) and as php, and similarly for other PHP commands.

In two weeks, the aliases login.domeneshop.no, scp.domeneshop.no, sftp.domeneshop.no and ssh.domeneshop.no will point at the new server. Some time after this, we will remove the alias newshell.domeneshop.no.

The alias telnet.domeneshop.no will continue to point to the old server.

The old login server (shell.domeneshop.no this week and next week only) will continue to be available as oldshell.domeneshop.no from now until PHP 4 is phased out later this year; we will publish a separate notice regarding the permanent discontinuation of PHP 4.

If you need to keep any cron jobs, you must remove and terminate the cron jobs on oldshell and re-create them on newshell, as there may be functional differences between the two servers, depending on your cron job. We remind you that cron jobs must not run more frequently than each fifth minute, and that it is important to have them start at a random time after the hour, half-hour or quarter hour.

Because the old shell server oldshell has a great deal of old, out-of-date software, there will be several differences which will affect functionality. If you have compiled programs yourself, these may need to be recompiled because of differing versions of glibc and other central libraries.

If you believe that there is any software missing on newshell as compared to oldshell, or there is anything else that does not work as it should, we would appreciate that you use our contact form to inform us.
