How do I install the Simple Machines forum?

SimpleMachines is a free forum available at http://www.simplemachines.org.

First, enter the location address for the installation, e.g. http://www.mittnavn.no/. If you located it in a folder called simple/, enter http://www.mittnavn.no/simple/.

If the above image appear, you will have to make files/folder as mentioned above writable. You can do this by clicking "Connect" after providing the ftp information or manually by using an ftp program, for example SmartFTP, or log into Unix shell (Web hosting Medium or larger).

In the above fields, enter the following configuration, mittnavn (myname) is your domain name:

Forum name: Replace My Communiy with your preferred forum name
Forum URL: Automatically filled out
Gzip Output: Check to save bandwidth
Database Sessions: Check to save data to a database and not to a file. Recommended.
MySQL server name: mittnavn.mysql.domeneshop.no
MYSQL username: mittnavn
MYSQL password: Your database password
MYSQL database name: mittnavn
MYSQL table prefix: Smart to use smf_ as a prefix if you have several installations creating tables in your database

Click "Proceed" to go on with the installation

In the fields above, enter:

Your username: Your forum username
Password: Your forum password
Email Address: Your forum email address
MYSQL Database Password: Your database password

Click "Finish"

A page saying you have now installed Simple Machines is displayed. You are asked for security reasons to change the rights of the installation/ folder which is writable for all at the moment and delete the install.php file. You can do it using an ftp program, e.g. CoreFTP or WinSCP, or log into Unix shell (Web hosting Medium or larger).
