DMARC stands for Domain-based Message Authentication, Reporting and Conformance. DMARC is used in combination with
SPF and DKIM and provides instructions for what the recipient's mail server should do with e-mail messages with a sender address on your domain that does not validate neither SPF nor DKIM.
There are 3 main settings for the type of DMARC policy you can choose:
- None = E-mail messages should be received anyway (p=none)
- Normal = E-mail messages should be quarantined, i.e. typically placed in the spam folder (p=quarantine)
- String = E-mail messages should be rejected (p=reject)
In addition, DMARC provides mechanisms to specify a number of additional options for e.g. how subdomains should be handled and whether you want daily reports with delivery status (for advanced users).
If you use Domainnameshop as your e-mail provider, we have set up a basic DMARC entry for your domain:
"v=DMARC1; p=quarantine"
You are free to change this yourself if you wish. It can be done from "advanced settings" in the DNS control panel for your domain, by creating or changing a TXT record with the hostname _dmarc, see instructions here.
In addition, it is possible to quickly change the DMARC policy (none/quarantine/reject) in the following way:
- Log in to the control panel at https://domainnameshop.com/login
- Click on My Domains
- Click on the relevant domain
- Click on the Email tab at the top of the page
- Click Show advanced settings
- Scroll down the DMARC policy page and select one of the 3 predefined settings
